Japanese Tea Ceremony

The Japanese Tea Path, also known as the tea ceremony, is a ritual of harmony and stillness that touches you in your entirety of body, soul and spirit. As a guest, you can have your first experience in this demonstration, for which no previous knowledge is required.

Only in silence can the Japanese tea ceremony unfold its beneficial effect on our senses. This begins with careful observation of the tea utensils, including the calligraphy and the floral decorations in a picture niche; the fragrance of the flower must not be so intense that it masks everything else. For the ear, there are the soft sounds of the humming water in the hot water kettle or the gentle flow of water from a bamboo ladle; there is the delicate fragrance that rises from the tea powder when it is poured over with hot water; there is the surprisingly fresh flavour that is triggered by drinking the frothy finished tea; and, last but not least, there is the conscious feeling of the tea bowl when the shape of the vessel is traced after drinking. These are all subtle experiences which, taken together, put the mind in a state of deep calm.

Jana Roloff has spent years learning the Ueda Sôko Ryû way of tea, one of Japan's oldest tea schools, at the Senshintei tea house in Hanover, a gift from the twin city of Hiroshima. Her understanding of the Way of Tea has been greatly enriched by several stays of several weeks in Hiroshima, the home of the Ueda school. Jana Roloff has been a teacher at Ueda Sôko Ryû since 2008.
